Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on improving the monitoring and evaluation of DRM capacity development initiatives.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper first explores the complexities and challenges presented in the literature, before using empirical data from a research project in six countries (Ethiopia, Pakistan, Myanmar, Philippines, Haiti and Mozambique) to discuss current approaches to M & E of DRM capacity strengthening interventions.

Findings

This is generally an area of technical weakness in the initiatives studied, with poor understanding of terminology, little attention to outcomes or impact and few independent evaluations. The need for greater inclusion of participants in M & E processes is identified and one programme from the fieldwork in Mozambique is presented as a case study example.

Originality/value

The paper ends by presenting a unique M & E framework developed for use by DRM programmes to track the outcomes of their interventions and ultimately raise standards in this area.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims at shedding some light on the various avenues marketers can undertake until finally an endorsement contract is signed. The focus of the study lies on verifying the generally held assumption that endorser selection is usually taken care of by creative agencies, vetting several candidates by means of subtle evaluation procedures.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study research has been carried out among companies experienced in celebrity endorsements to learn more about the endorser selection process in practise. Based on these cases theory is inductively developed.

Findings

The research suggests that the generally held assumption that endorsers being selected and thoroughly vetted by a creative agency may not be universally valid. A normative model to illustrate the continuum of the selection process in practise is suggested and the two polar case studies (Swiss brand Lindt and Austrian Vitatherm) are presented in depth.

Research limitations/implications

As the results of the study suggest, generally held assumptions towards the endorser selection process may be challenged. Consequently, this affects the necessary accuracy of models to evaluate the brand‐endorser matchup.

Practical implications

Conducted case studies indicate that there are various avenues how brands come to their endorser. This paper could not find evidence of a best practice strategy.

Originality/value

A normative model for the celebrity endorser selection process is suggested.

Abstract

Purpose

In many industries (e.g. cars and clothing) manufacturing complexity and unpredictability have increased over the last couple of years because of an increasing variety of products and shortening product life cycles. At the same time the manufacturers in these industries appear to have more problems with maintaining high quality levels. This paper aims to develop a methodology to study the effects of these developments on quality management systems.

Design/methodology/approach

At three European automotive manufacturers the two trends have been studied by means of a case study approach. Simons' four levers of control model is utilised to categorise and interpret the results of the case studies.

Findings

The application of a management control model in the field of quality management is found to be useful in explaining what changes are necessary to maintain high quality levels. From the case studies in the automotive sector it is concluded that there is a shift in quality management systems from a diagnostic towards a more interactive approach. This is in line with what can be expected as a result of the increasing uncertainty in the automotive sector, caused by shortening life cycles of car models and smaller batch sizes.

Originality/value

This research presents a novel application of Simons' four levers of control model to the field of quality management. Based on the experience with three case studies at European automotive manufacturers, this approach seems to have potential.

Abstract

Purpose

To measure service quality perceptions among spectators of a sports event.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper reports the main findings of a 290 respondent questionnaire survey carried out “live” among home spectators at a sports fixture. This methodology of distributing and collecting questionnaires to and from home spectators is novel and can be used by other researchers. Also reported in the paper are follow‐up discussions at a shopping precinct with lapsed fans.

Findings

The paper identifies the main factors that influence attendance and the initiatives to attract new or lapsed supporters. Amongst the main findings is that those spectators who make regular contributions to the club through a range of schemes and are members of its independent supporters Association rate club and players public profiles higher and perceive season tickets and ground entrance prices better value than non‐members, and are also more likely to visit the club shop to purchase merchandise.

Originality/value

This paper reports a project carried out by a supporters forum of a Rugby League Club into the means of increasing attendance at home games. There are sparse details in the literature of similar projects of its type and scale being undertaken in sports arenas. Therefore, the methodology adopted, the questionnaire details and the findings can be useful in other sports environments.

Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the literature on the many dimensions of the principal's positionality by using a unique research approach to link the experiences of the policy implementing principal to embodiment.

Design/methodology/approach

The researchers employed a form of critical policy analysis that utilized photovoice to examine the experience of two principals in South Carolina, USA.

Findings

The findings suggest that these two principals do feel, beyond a cognitive emotional level, the experiences of being the policy implementing principal, where the multiple physically imprinted identities typified one principal's experiences and the highly entropic world of her high school causes another principal to physically and metaphorically integrate situations into her physiology.

Originality/value

In this paper, the authors are able to expand discussions of the principals’ engagement with policy by using a unique theoretical and methodological approach.

Abstract

Ironically, the business challenges which require many senior executives to develop greater personal flexibility and adaptability often reduce the time available for personal development. An approach to assessing executive‐level development needs, which is both time‐and cost‐effective, is described. A framework for successful development, the determination of company expectation, establishment of the personal change context, auditing of personal strengths and development needs, and a development‐planning process is outlined. A summary model of the entire process concludes.
